Located just a short drive from Edmonton, sits the charming little town of Devon, population 6600, home to the world famous oil derrick, "Leduc No.1", that started the legendary Alberta oil boom back in Feb. of 1947 located at the Canadian Energy Museum.
This famous oil derrick was one of the beasts that catapulted Alberta into one of the largest oil booms in Canadian history, allowing Canada to become self sufficient within a decade and ultimately became a major exporter of oil world wide. This well contributed to the 300 million barrels of oil produced from the Leduc-Woodbend oilfield before being decommisioned in 1974.
Situated just a couple minutes north-west of the Town of Devon is the ever-popular Devon Voyageur Park, with it's wide expansive beach like area where swimmers and sunbathers alike gather for an enjoyable day of sun and fun on the banks of the North Saskatchewan River.
Feeling challenged, take a hike up the "Legs of Fire Stairs" a short distance away. Over 300+ stairs take you from the river valley up to the town level.
Feel like a round of golf on one of the finest courses in the area? The Devon Golf & Conference Center is the place to be. It's 18 holes with narrow, tree-lined fairways following the natural contours of the river valley will challenge the shot making prowess of golfers of all levels. Greens are known for being fast and require a soft touch on the undulating surfaces.
